This article is all about bringing RunRevLive.14 to you, with outstanding content and more inclusive options than ever. We want to see as many of our great community at this conference as we possibly can. Here's how we're making it happen.
Scholarship Program
We have taken the decision to run our popular and successful Scholarship program again this year, and announce it a little earlier than usual to allow you a bit more time to consider it and make arrangements. As always, places for this program will be limited, and we will select applicants carefully based the merit of the application. So, what is the Scholarship program and how do you apply?
The Ethos
At RunRev we have always been intensely proud of the support and engagement we get from the whole LiveCode community. Now, more than ever, we don't want to exclude anybody from participation, and we know that some of you don't have much cash available. RunRevLive is a fabulous event and the best place and time in the world to meet other LiveCoders and share knowledge, enthusiasm and ideas. The Scholarship program aims to make it as accessible as possible to as many people as possible.
Much as we would like to, we cannot afford to subsidise travel and accommodation costs in this program. You still have to find these yourself. We will subsidise ticket costs for successful applicants.
For Students
We are eager for new LiveCode users to join us at RunRevLive.14 and the scholarship is perfect for anyone who wants to learn the basics of LiveCode. Our beginners' track will bring you up to speed with LiveCode and teach you how to make your own apps in interesting, structured, hands on sessions. Best of all this will be a great chance to attend a professional programming conference and meet potential future employers. If you're a student, and you don't have rich and doting parents to pay for your attendance... apply below!
For Educators
This is a brilliant chance for educators to add to their skill base.
LiveCode is great educational tool, and we'll show you how to harness it at RunRevLive.14. Our thought provoking sessions will include several from Educators like you, already using LiveCode in their schools and colleges. Get professional insight from the LiveCode gurus about your plans and projects. Learn how to leverage your students' love of mobile to make interesting, engaging lessons that your students will relate to. If your school or college can't fund your attendance, and money is tight, this program is for you.
I'm neither a student nor an educator but I still want to attend.
Then we still want to hear from you. Maybe you represent a charity. Maybe you're doing work with community groups. Or maybe, like most of us, you're feeling the pinch in these hard times. Our aim is that everyone who wants to go to the conference, can go to the conference.
The scholarship programme is for students, educators, charities or anyone else who feels they should be given the chance to attend at a greatly reduced price.
About the cost
There is a limited number of these tickets available, and we have to reach a certain minimum average cost. Making a bid of $200 doesn't automatically exclude you, we will consider every application on its merits. However, making a higher bid means that we will be able to subsidise more of the lower price tickets - you can be a part of helping some penniless student to attend! Students, educators and charities will receive higher priority than individuals, but if you think you have a strong case to make, then let us know. We'll consider every application.
To Apply
To apply for a RunRev Scholarship email support@runrev.com telling us who you are, why you think you should get a scholarship ticket and how much you can afford to spend on the ticket, in no more than 300 words. Please put 'RunRevLive Scholarship Application" in the subject line.
Community Day
The Community Day initiative gives you the opportunity to participate for Day One of the conference. You can get your ticket for Day One only, for the very modest price of $199*. You will have full access to the all day Beginner Course if you are new to LiveCode and want some intensive training. Alongside this will be running sessions from Richard Gaskin, Community Manager and our own tech team taking you through brand new features. We'll look at theming in the next big release and what it will mean for you. Scott Rossi has agreed to give a session on the exciting new Widget feature. Check out the full schedule here. In the evening there will be a Community Party - Lunch, coffee and party all included in your ticket price!
Exciting Content Rolling In
New Speakers
I'm delighted to be able to announce a raft of new speakers for RunRevLive.14 in San Diego. I'm particularly excited that we have a number of brand new faces this year. Also back by popular demand such excellent presenters as Scott Rossi and Devin Asay. Here are the latest additions to our speaker line-up.
Alex Buk
Teaching the Great Minds of the Future
Alex Buk is the Director of Education at Kids' Great Minds, an educational institute dedicated to provide fun computer learning to our next generation.
As the times change, the methods of education remain the same. We do utilize technology to educate, but we keep doing it with the same principles. The teacher writes on a board, the students copy and therefore they learn by repetition.
KGM works on a different approach, demonstrating the capabilities of a specific technology to the students and then asking them to open their computers and have fun. There is a curriculum to follow on each class, but it is not imposed on the students. This approach allows students to create their own games, apps, animations, etc. It's amazing to see an instructor teaching kids the techniques to create and see how each screen has a completely different project.
When KGM embarked on a quest to find the best tools to teach their students, LiveCode came out on top for its ease to use and the possibilities presented by the platform. The students are reaching out further than ever before and in record times. When teaching a 12 to 17 years old student, we there are no limitations; society has not created boundaries for them on what can and can't be done with current technology. They are the ones that will be shaping our world and KGM feel strongly that LiveCode provides the best platform for the students to express themselves.

Best Practice/Beginner Track: Making an Ebook in LiveCode
This all day beginners course will walk you through how to create an interactive e-book application. We will start from a point of little or no assumed knowledge of LiveCode, and in addition to basic programming and LiveCode concepts, introduce you to working with text, including Unicode (it just works!); responding to hot links embedded in text; integrating multimedia; and simple data storage techniques. We will also discuss a few proven Best Practices that will help you off to a flying start with LiveCode.
Larry Walker
Special Interest Track: Talking to Arduinos and Other USB Devices
LiveCode talks to Arduinos via an RS-232 connection. How to do this using a USB connection (eliminating the need to use a USB-Serial converter cable) and deploy that solution successfully in your projects. This session will describe the technique that makes this work easily, show a couple of typical applications, and provide a working template for using the technique, one that is also a useful tool in its own right, for doing Arduino development using the Bitlash language/mini-OS.
Talking to USB devices (either via a USB cable or via a wireless USB-equivalent like Xbee) is a very useful and powerful way to extend LiveCode’s reach into embedded devices: LiveCode provides a powerful and user-friendly UI, while the Arduino (or Raspbery Pi or other embedded device) handles the low-level hardware bit-twiddling.

Special Interest Track: LiveCode Backend Development - Leaving SQL Behind
Robust backend databases for LiveCode are possible, without having to learn a cryptic query language. We discuss issues like keeping data in sync across locations, offline availability, or running reports from mobile - without setting foot beyond the language we all know and love.
