Article 3: Speaker Sessions

App in Store

RunRevLive.14 is getting closer, and we're working hard on signing up speakers to bring you the best and freshest content. As always you can expect a wide mix of topics with lots of technical tips as well as marketing advice, hands on seminars, opportunities to talk one on one with our engineers and success stories from the community. You'll get the lowdown from our team on the very latest features in LiveCode, with walkthroughs for some of the most exciting new developments. Be entertained, be educated but above all, be there!

I'm pleased to say we have already signed up popular speakers Chipp Walters, David Brooks and Richard Gaskin to bring you their expertise.

Chipp WaltersChipp Walters will discuss the 5D's methodology-- it's not Agile and it's not waterfall. It's a process that virtually guarantees success for all your LiveCode projects and customers. Walters will also go into detail on how he sets up LiveCode projects for delivery on MacOS, Windows, Android and iOS all at the same time INCLUDING multiple developers. Attendees will be treated to a free copy of his framework and management toolset (including all the new and old altPlugins).

Chipp Walters is VP of Engineering for Compass Learning, the largest K-12 digital content solutions in the US. He and his team are responsible for all technology strategy, platform development, interface and product design. Predictably, he uses LiveCode as not only a rapid prototyping tool, but also as a delivery platform for native solutions. As those who have been around RunRev for a few years might expect, Chipp's cohort, Chris Bohnert is the Director of Architecture for Compass Learning as well.

A LiveCode-Based College Course Management System

David Brooks will be presenting this session. There was no appropriate software when online courses first became possible. Today course management system software such as BlackBoard and Canvas are used widely. Before this it was necessary to develop tools and LiveCode proved to be an excellent choice. Of particular interest was the ability to develop a system for immediate, asynchronous, performance-related feedback – better known as a testing system. This talk will describe the management system in detail emphasizing its current form as a server backend. Materials are delivered in Web format with LiveCode scripts managing and recording all student interactions. The software is used to support over 20 courses at the University of Nebraska. Desktop tools used to create necessary files also have been developed.

Richard GaskinRichard Gaskin will be presenting two sessions for us.

Data Storage Options in LiveCode
From simple flat files to databases and more, LiveCode offers a wide range of options for storing data. This session provides an overview of these methods, along with an introduction to the LiveCode language features to use them well. Attendees will leave with a good understanding of the strengths and weaknesses of the various ways to store data, so they can choose the most appropriate one for each of the projects they're working on.

What LiveCode Community Means for You
LiveCode Community Edition opens up many new opportunities for everyone, from educators and hobbyists to professional developers. This session will begin with an overview of RunRev's open source initiative with the GNU Public License, and a review of the types of projects where it can be a good choice. This will be followed by a discussion of the collaboration between RunRev and the community to enhance the software experience of LiveCode itself. Bring your questions: in the spirit of fostering collaboration, this session will allow for extensive Q&A.

Check out our schedule here, and check back often as we expect to be updating this rapidly in the coming weeks!
