Goodbye revUp, Hello Blog
Goodbye revUp, Hello Blog

After almost 10 years and 185 issues, revUp will no longer be landing in your inbox every 2 weeks. RevUp is merging with our increasingly vibrant and well used blog, where you can post comments and read the latest from our team as well as outside authors. Articles and news from the community will go straight to the blog, and we'll compile the best of the blog every two weeks to send you via email.

Why this change? The time is right for a more interactive experience. Often the comments received on the blog are as interesting as the article and lead to a useful debate. Many of you now prefer to read online rather than via your inbox, and the blog allows you to view fresh content more often than a fortnightly newsletter.

This does not mean we'll be bringing you less content! I'll still be mining the community and on the alert for interesting stories to bring to you, via our blog. You can expect to see a mix of tutorials, news, app publications and industry comment on the blog, from as wide a range of authors as we can source. If you have something to say, please do continue to let me or Jana know.

I'm now going to wax a little sentimental. Bear with me. I've been editing revUp a long time! RevUp launched in April 2006, and its remit was to bring you much needed tutorial materials, as well as community news, views and good advice. At the time, there was a dearth of good learning materials for the program, and the focus was very much on adding to the fund of available information on the LiveCode language (then called Revolution). We've published a lot of materials since then, with the full dictionary now available online as well as in the product, the lessons portal covering almost every aspect of LiveCode, and numerous academies, online schools, external websites, books and tutorials having been published. The newsletter archive remains a font of wisdom on a variety of topics, and there are a number of articles that stick in my mind.

The earliest to survive is No. 7, published in August 2006. The navigation has sadly fallen prey to some nasty php errors but I see this contained the final part of Jacqueline Landman Gay's excellent series on CGI's. While the old Revolution CGI engine has now been replaced by LiveCode Server, you can still read all of this tutorial on her website here.

Some other interesting articles from the archives includes this one on advertising keywords, the brilliant "Cannonballs" series by Robert Cailliau, Trevor DeVore's article on Behaviors which was later adopted into our lessons portal, this useful tutorial on Paypal Integration by Mark Wieder, an early essay in Robotics by Ian Wood. I think my all time favourite has to be the one published on April 1st 2009.

Over time the branding has evolved, with a new look every few years. Many authors from within our team and our wider community have contributed. I thank you all. The archive now contains over 700 articles, full of information some of which has dated, but some is still just as useful as when it was published. Browse, enjoy, and I look forward to seeing you on our blog in the future!
